PSHE and RSHE

Intent

At Rowde C of E Primary Academy, the intent of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education, including Relationships and Health Education, is to develop confident, resilient and compassionate children who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

Our curriculum equips children with the knowledge, skills and vocabulary they need to build positive relationships, understand and manage their emotions, make informed decisions, keep themselves safe and look after their physical and mental wellbeing. Through carefully sequenced, age-appropriate learning, children explore rights, responsibilities, diversity and respect, developing the confidence to contribute positively to school and the wider community.

As a Church of England school, our Christian vision of Learn, Grow and Love, together with our values of Respect, Optimism, Wisdom, Determination, Enthusiasm and Love, underpin every aspect of our PSHE curriculum, helping children to flourish both academically and personally.

Implementation

We deliver PSHE through the Jigsaw PSHE 3–11 programme, updated for September 2026 and fully aligned with the 2025 Department for Education Relationships, Sex and Health Education guidance. The curriculum provides a carefully sequenced progression from Reception to Year 6 through six half-termly units that revisit and build knowledge, skills and understanding over time.

Each lesson develops children's emotional literacy alongside their knowledge through discussion, reflection, collaborative learning and mindful practice. Our PSHE curriculum includes the statutory teaching of Relationships Education and Health Education, alongside wider learning about citizenship, economic wellbeing, British Values and personal development.

PSHE is embedded throughout school life. Our collective worship, behaviour curriculum, Forest School, educational visits and enrichment opportunities reinforce the knowledge and values taught within lessons. Children also benefit from specialist workshops and safeguarding experiences, including online safety, NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe, Bikeability, emergency awareness and water safety.

Impact

By the time children leave Rowde, they have developed the confidence, resilience and emotional literacy needed to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond.

They are able to build positive relationships, communicate respectfully, manage emotions, make informed choices and recognise how to keep themselves physically and emotionally safe. Children understand the importance of kindness, inclusion and respect for others and know when and how to seek support if they are worried or concerned.

The impact of our curriculum is reflected in children's behaviour, wellbeing, confidence and readiness for life beyond primary school. Through regular assessment, pupil voice and curriculum monitoring, we continually review and refine our provision to ensure every child is supported to Learn, Grow and Love.
