Our Rowde Curriculum
Our curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision:
‘With God’s guidance; sowing the seeds of success; nurturing and inspiring pupils and adults to flourish.’
As a Church of England school, we aim to nurture every aspect of the children and adults within our community – academically, physically, socially and spiritually. This is captured in our mission: Learn, Grow, Love.
From this foundation come our core Christian values – Respect, Optimism, Wisdom, Determination, Enthusiasm and Love. Our vision, mission and values shape both what we want our pupils to learn and the people we hope they will become.
An ambitious curriculum for every child
At Rowde, we believe that every child is entitled to an ambitious, broad and rich curriculum. We have high expectations for all pupils, regardless of background or need, and work to identify and remove barriers so that every child can participate, achieve and flourish.
We place strong foundations at the heart of our curriculum. From the Early Years onwards, we prioritise the essential knowledge and skills pupils need for future learning, with particular emphasis on communication and language, reading, writing, vocabulary and mathematics.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that new learning builds upon what children already know. Important knowledge, skills and vocabulary are explicitly taught, revisited and connected over time. We want our pupils not simply to encounter new learning, but to remember it, make connections and increasingly apply what they know with confidence and independence.
A broad and connected curriculum
We want our pupils to develop a rich knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Alongside strong foundations in English, Mathematics and Science, children experience the full breadth of the curriculum through Religious Education, history, geography, art and design, design and technology, computing, music, languages, PE and PSHE.
Each subject has its own carefully planned progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary. Where meaningful connections exist between subjects, we make these explicit so that pupils can draw upon and deepen their previous learning.
High-quality literature has an important place within our curriculum. Through our Rowde Reading Spine and whole-class Book Club sessions, pupils encounter a rich and diverse range of authors, genres, cultures, experiences and perspectives. Carefully selected texts also provide opportunities to deepen pupils' understanding of ideas and knowledge encountered elsewhere within the curriculum.
Learning, growing and flourishing
We recognise that worthwhile learning can be challenging. Through our LEARN behaviours, we teach pupils how to become successful learners: to Listen for learning, Engage and offer ideas, Ask questions and for help, Reflect and improve, and Never give up.
Our curriculum also extends beyond the classroom. Educational visits, visitors, sport, music, performances, clubs, residential experiences, Collective Worship and opportunities to contribute to school and community life broaden children's horizons and help them discover their individual interests and talents.
As a Church of England school, we provide opportunities for pupils to develop spiritually, morally, socially, culturally, mentally and physically. We want our children to develop curiosity, wisdom, compassion, confidence and a strong sense of belonging, alongside the knowledge and skills they need for their future.
Ultimately, our curriculum brings our vision to life: enabling every child at Rowde to Learn, to Grow, and to Love themselves, others and the world around them.
